After a storm the order of operations is simple: stop the water, then deal with the insurer. Most of the additional damage from a storm happens in the days afterwards, while a hole stays open and the ceiling keeps taking water.
The second half matters more than people expect. Insurance claims are rarely refused because the damage was not real. They get sent back over evidence and wording. Photographs from the roof, a scope written the way an assessor expects to read it, and dates that line up with the event are what get a claim through first time.
An emergency call-out has two halves and they are priced separately. The make-safe — tarping, temporary flashing, stopping the water tonight — is a small job quoted before we do it, even at 2am. The permanent repair is quoted afterwards in daylight, once anyone can actually see what happened.
On a genuine storm claim the make-safe is commonly claimable, and most policies expect you to mitigate further damage rather than leave a hole open until an assessor gets there.
What moves the price:
How to tell
Most of these you can check yourself from the ground, before you call anyone.

Sudden storm and hail damage is generally covered; gradual wear and lack of maintenance generally is not. Do not go up, and stay out of the room underneath it. Ring us. If there are power lines involved, ring the electricity distributor first — that is not a roofing job.
No, and you generally should not. Most policies require you to prevent further damage. Leaving a hole open for three days while you wait turns a roof claim into a ceiling and contents claim.
